Lodi Unified School Board Endorsements

Of those interviewed and that are vying for three seats on the LUSD School Board, we saw no one with the experience or platform that was more persuasive than that of the current board members. Therefore, continuing with Knackstedt, Freitas and Nava for another term seems the reasonable approach.   We may very well be only partially through the days of COVID-19 with “white-water” days still with us in the short term.  Consequently, the experience that this board has jointly gained working together during these tough times should help them navigate the days ahead for LUSD.
 
However, what we have learned through our own research and through these interviews, is that there is tremendous room for improvement in overall scholastic performance.  It imperative that we have the programs and plans that allow those students that seek a college education to have the scholastic aptitudes (GPA & coursework) to be prepared and competent to compete for admission to colleges and universities throughout the region and country.   In California approximately 30% of graduating seniors go on to a four-year college and we must ensure the LUSD performs at levels that are significantly above the average.  We owe it to our children that they are well prepared for the changing workplace environment.   Can business and the community help, if so how, let’s talk soon about our future.
 
For non-four-year college bound students, LUSD with the help of the business community and in coordination with Delta College must improve the training, coursework, internships and opportunities for this larger group of graduating students.   We must understand that this group of students must also be prepared and provided the skills that they will need to be productive and an asset to our local community.  LUSD must re-energize coursework and vocational programs so that students are prepared and qualified to get a job and be able to achieve a family supporting wage.  We need a cultural rebuild that clearly provides options for non-four-year bound students.  Let’s make aggressive progress in the reintroduction and expansion of vocational training.  
 
The scholastic or vocation path that is chosen is largely up to the young person through personal choice and academic achievement, however, the business community believes the goal of an educational institution is to position the student for a successful life whatever path is chosen.  
 
The Chamber, and its business owning-members are committed to working with LUSD to achieve an improved pathway to a job or college.  Success in such an effort will improve economic well-being to many young people in Lodi.  Let’s get busy on better student outcomes and a stronger local economy built upon young successful individuals.
